If you're truly a total beginner . . . May 19, 2010 steve (Wisconsin) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Five stars for the fabulous Linux operating system, zero stars for the "value added" video and printed matter.
The software is the software, and you are paying for the convenience of taking delivery of disks in lieu of downloading online. That part worked for me, and I was glad to pay the trivial $20 cost of this package.
However, if you're buying this package because of the perceived value of the video introduction or the printed list of commands, then I recommend that you save your money and just download the software. The video has no value beyond visual confirmation that a language called Linux does, indeed, exist. As to learning anything useful from it, forget it, it's not going to happen because the content is a series of Linux commands flashed up on the screen (I had to watch it on my TV because I don't have DVD software on my computer).
Ditto, the printed list of commands is, well, a printed list of commands. What is the last software package you bought where a printed list of commands was useful? Wordstar, maybe, in the 1980s? (Yes, my computing history goes back a long way . . .)
Bottom line -- if you want a convenient package of the Linux software, this is worthwhile -- heck, it's only $20 -- but if you think the video or the printed commands are value added and you need something substantive to get you started with Linux, they are not what you need, and you should look elsewhere.
More geared towards 32 bit March 25, 2010 ToneytheTiger (Nevada) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
It proudly states that it is for both the 32 bit & 64 bit systems - but 3 of the 4 disks are for the 32 bit system. Get Linux Jazz, for your 64 bit system - and it's only about $3.00 more. (if you don't need/want the tutorials, just go online and download it for free - plus online you can try Mint, Gnome and others)
Best Linux set around, great service from seller too! March 3, 2010 Alex "Bold Biker" (Lake Forest IL) I received the product few days ago, and it is BY FAR THE BEST linux set available! The installation DVDs are great, the introduction video DVD is very informative (at least for beginner as myself), there's plenty of value in this set. It all came in beautifully packaged , professionally done box in merely 3 days! I found absolutely nothing to complain about this set. I also had few questions and dvdxdvd answered them faster than I checked my email! I tried Ubuntu first, but Kubuntu's interface took over. My average 2 years old desktop gets a second chance ;).
Rest assured I will come back and buy again. DVDxDVD is great company to deal with!
Bye-bye windows! February 18, 2010 Jim Verstale (Parsippany, NJ) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was using linux for last 4 months in double boot configuration. I do just a regular stuff, like internet browsing, email, skip, some photography. In 4 months practically didn't touch WIndows at all. Last time I did, my antivirus said that I caught something and hanged the system forever. I just copied my files to sun stick and removed windows partition. bye-bye windows. It is very nice operating system for a beginner. 4 months ago I had absolutely no experience with Linux. But the installations are really easy and video DVD sheds some light on how to keep up with a command line. Forget about windows, get this thing and have nice reliable operating system. I did not regret for a second!
Linux for me February 17, 2010 Leslie (Reno, NV) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
My old Toshiba Sat was dying with windows on it, loosing network all the time, catching viruses and hang 4 time a day. Ubuntu fit the machine, made it much faster and it keeps on net well. I tried Ubuntu before, few years ago and the difference is day and night. The interface is robust, all options work as intended, some nice games are there, openoffice fast and very cool. I really liked all the apps in it, especially vector drawing. The text editor is very easy to use and understand and rich on functionality. Library that come with it is very helpful. I was tweaking samba and shared directories with NFS to my mac machine and all worked well. My wireless was instantly recognized during installation, so it took about five minutes to hook up on my network (I forgot that I had address filtering enabled on the router ;-). So great set everything works fine, no problems whatsoever.
