Family Tree Maker Essential July 24, 2010 Dan Pogrant (KIMBERLY, WI, US) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This version is very hard to use. I have an older version and I am going to keep it so I can actually accomplish something. Every step I want to take, I end up getting the instruction booklet out and it's not all that useful. Nothing seems to flow smoothly; I hunt all over the screen for what I want to try to do next.

I purchased this item in order to update my older version of this program. Doing so means adapting to the new program as well as correcting many errors that occurred during the transfer of data from the old program to the new one; very time-consuming. I like that the new program shows my relationship to my ancestors and includes maps of where they lived. (I haven't figured it all out yet so there may be other nice features I haven't found yet.) I had nearly 20,000 names in my old program (which was very old). With the new program, everyone shows up about 6 tmes, so I have to merge all these entries.
The program comes with a one month's free subscription to [...] which I have not signed up for as I don't think I would use it very much right now; assume I can do this later on after I've completed all this merging.
One thing that upset me was that, for some reason, this item could not be shipped to my PO Box which I use as my legal address. Mail is not delivered to my home and this is the first time Amazon wouldn't ship to my PO Box. I don't understand this as the item came via the U.S. post office and not via UPS. I had it shipped to a family member who was going to install the program for me anyway. I hope this doesn't happen again as it will affect my ability to order from Amazon.

Family Tree Maker - Best Ever! July 20, 2010 Ed Lots of new ideas as to how the improvements made to this genealogy program will make your experience rewarding and fun! But it! Best program on the market, at least from my viewpoint.
Family Tree Maker 2010 Review July 20, 2010 Constance Curts (Kansas City, MO USA) The good: List of recently opened trees is shown; right-click menu lets you rename your tree, re-open a tree, and working on multiple trees is much easier. Slightly easier way to insert media for person and sources for facts. Much easier source management; if have duplicate source entries with slightly different wording or spelling, can quickly Find and Replace all duplicate sources for all usages. Performance seems better, even with very large files. Can multi-task and compare by displaying multiple tree files in separate windows, or you can use one window and work sequentially on multiple files.
The bad: Still cannot add same source to multiple facts. Fixing relationships with parents (natural, adopted, step, etc.) still duplicates child's record(s) in your reports. When have natural mother and step-mother, can attach child to both, but reports show child and child's descendants twice. Spouses still have 'shared info' connecting 2 records with no duplication; seems same concept for child with natural and step parents. Still cannot create reports from a person in the middle of a tree. Must find the multiple oldest ancestors for all lineages and have duplicate info in Outline and Register reports (most commonly used). Cannot select middle person and select all ancestors and descendats (as done when exporting date to new file). Software should be able to compile tree with minimal or no duplicated descendant lineages.
The ugly: Still cannot open GED files older than version 5.5, and opening older files is still convoluted process. Mini-FTM Vers 2005 available on ancestry to install(last ver to open older GEDs). Link hidden in Help Files, FAQs, and if you do not use exactly same index words and spacing, Answer with 2005 link does not display. Ver. 2010 file format CONVERTS older version, but you cannot undo it. You better have a backup file somewhere if you want to work in 2008 while learning 2010. To attach media, cannot navigate to a shared folder outside the tree's specific media folder. And for loyal users, buy only the "Essentials" package. Higher cost packages includes CDs with the same OLD reference materials, not updated for a few years. Higher priced packages not worth it.
